Ontario Lottery and Games (OLG) may not be a household name on the outside Canada, but it provides more than $ 2.5 billion a year in cash to help Ontario providing health care, for the treatment, prevention and investigation of problem gambling; and support for amateur athletes.
The playOLG website offers a suite of lottery and casino games and is now undergoing a complete overhaul. UK game technology company Bede Gaming was selected to create OLG’s new customer platform.
Bede to create a whole new online platform
The contract with OLG is by far Bede’s most important. It is also the first time that the company has won a supplier contract in North America.
Dave pridmore, SVP Enterprise Strategy & Analytics, OLG explained that as a Crown agency of the Province of Ontario, the company implemented a rigorous procurement process that began in 2017.
“We are investing in digital technology and product solutions to improve the customer experience and ensure that we are responsive to changing customer expectations. The platform that Bede will provide will be a central point of integration for OLG’s products and channels.
He said the new platform would be put into operation early 2020, and that “the platform provided by Bede is an essential part of our future strategy to meet the changing needs of our customers”.
The new platform will allow playOLG to add new games, improve the online experience for players and improve the mobile platform.
Alex Boucher, CEO of Bede Gaming, explained that Bede “is building a complete replacement for the platform technology that underpins OLG.”
The entire project will build on Bede’s existing platform customized and augmented for the specific needs of PlayOLG.
This is great news for Ontario gamers, especially the news that playOLG will be getting a mobile option.
Online poker and sports betting could finally come to playOLG
PlayOLG has launched its Play OLG Poker Twitter account in 2013. The final tweet was posted on November 22, 2013, just four days after the account was opened.
PlayOLG obviously intended to offer online poker, but the plans never got beyond the drawing board stage.
Sports betting suffered the same fate, but now that OLG has hired Bede to update the platform, there’s a good chance these early plans for poker and sports betting will come true.
So if the commitment to “add new games” includes online poker and sports betting, Ontarians will be able to abandon their accounts with offshore operators and return to the province’s safer regulated environment provided by OLG.
Bede’s website boasts that the Bede platform is ideal for operators looking to add a bookmaker:
“For operators wishing to launch or add a bookmaker to their branded offering, selecting the right platform partner is the key decision. To launch a differentiated offering, it is essential to be able to take advantage of deep integrations with the bookmaker of your choice, as well as to use cutting-edge marketing and reporting tools.

Bede is new to North America but not to iGaming
Through its European operations, Bede’s platform currently processes hundreds of millions of transactions each month, totaling more than 2.5 billion one year.
The platform is “scalable, modular and adaptable allowing operators to integrate any third-party software into the platform or use its tailor-made tools. The platform is also integrated into terrestrial systems offering a true omnichannel convergence solution.
Bede is licensed by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) and prior to closing the deal with OLG, Bede registered with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario as a games supplier.
The company is optimistic that the contract with OLG will only be its first in North America. Managing Director Alex Butcher said:
“We are absolutely delighted to have been selected by OLG. It’s a huge recognition of the strength of our offering and we look forward to supporting one of the most respected names in lotteries in the pursuit of digital excellence.
